Two tractor-trailers and 10 other vehicles collided in the northbound lanes near Exit 39, Route 114/Lewsiberry Road, in Fairview Township just after 6:30 p.m. Arriving emergency crews said there was a large field of debris with multiple patients and vehicles blocking all lanes of Interstate 83. According to fire officials, no one was killed. The crash shut down a stretch of the interstate for hours, causing extensive delays and backups on surrounding roads. While crews were at the scene of the wreck, the fire department said a secondary crash occurred involving multiple vehicles due to a large backlog. A worker at a nearby hotel said she heard what sounded like a heavy load falling off a tractor-trailer. Another man staying at the hotel said his wife heard what sounded like massive mounds of metal slamming together, and that’s when she called him. “She called me and said, do not come home 83, south or north, because there was a horrible accident in front of our house. And that’s why I said, well, we’re not, when we left his house, we had to come the back way. It took us 20 minutes to take a four-minute ride,” he said.
