Eighteen female guards and staff members have been fired or resigned from a comfortable UK male prison for engaging in hookups and other steamy sessions with inmates, according to UK reports.
Illegal activities at HMP Berwyn, the UK’s largest men’s prison, date back to when the facility opened in 2017 and have even resulted in three women facing jail time, records show. obtained by BBC and mirror.
A lovesick guard, Jennifer Gavan, accepted money to smuggle a phone to a thief which was then used to help the couple exchange intimate snaps, The Mirror reported.
He pleaded guilty to misconduct and was slapped last year after eight months behind bars.
Guard Emily Watson had sex with a drug dealer who was in prison for causing death by dangerous driving, the publication reported.
She performed a sexual act on the inmate twice and had sex with him once while inside his cell, a UK court heard, yahoo! News reported.
And probation officer Ayshea Gunn went on a date with an armed robber and the two also exchanged “highly sexualized” photos and videos, The Mirror reported.
In addition, he smuggled a pair of underwear for the prisoner into her bra, according to court proceedings, Yahoo! News reported.
Both Gunn and Watson were sentenced to prison.
The 18 women caught up in the torrid scandal at the 2,000-capacity facility were either operational staff or worked there for partner organizations such as rehabilitation, the BBC reported.
The president of the Prison Officers Association insisted the sexual encounters were because the “wrong kind of woman” was being recruited, the Mirror reported.
“The staff that are hired don’t have face-to-face interviews,” Mark Fairhurst said, adding. “Everything is done on Zoom.”
“Many people who get these jobs don’t have enough life experience and are susceptible to prisoner conditioning,” he also said.


The HM Prison Service previously announced it would improve training and remove guards “who undermine our exemplary service”, the BBC reported.
The agency stressed that it would not “tolerate those few officers who think they are above the law.”
“That is why our newly strengthened Anti-Corruption Team is working around the clock to root out and clamp down on those who undermine our exemplary service with their dangerous behavior and ensure they face the most serious consequences possible for their crimes,” said the HM Prisons Service, reportedly. .
Since 2019, 31 female officers in England and Wales have been fired for inappropriate interactions, according to statistics reported by the Mirror.
More than 500 prison employees have reportedly received anti-corruption training in the past 18 months.
HMP Berwyn is known for its superior conditions and was previously considered the “most comfortable” prison in the UK, the Mirror reported.


The cells do not have bars on the window and inmates are allowed to have televisions, laptops and telephones.
The prison also has a sports center, a gym and an outdoor space for inmates, according to the Daily Mail.
Educational programs are also reportedly offered.
