22% of NYC Covid-19 patients critical

More than a fifth (22%) of hospitalised Covid-19 patients in New York City were critically ill, states a study.

Writing in The Lancet, researchers said 79 per cent of these patients required mechanical ventilation and 39 per cent did not survive.

The findings, they added, mirrored reports from China, Italy, and the UK, with older age and pre-existing conditions being the strongest risk factors associated with poor outcomes.
