OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) – First Alert 6 has the headlines you need to know to get your Saturday started.

Man in custody following incident involving MECA security at Heartland of America Park Friday

As people were celebrating the 4th of July before the concert started Friday night at the Gene Leahy Mall, a disturbance occurred involving a security guard at nearby Heartland of America Park.

Omaha police say a 42-year-old man was asked to leave the park three times by security, but refused.

An official with MECA said their security told them the man reportedly had a knife and a gun while threatening the security guard.

A MECA official told First Alert 6 officers quickly took him into custody, the security guard was not injured.

Homicide investigation underway after man found dead in South Omaha

The Omaha Police Department is investigating after a man was found dead Friday morning.

According to a report, the man was found in the area of 20th Street and Missouri Avenue, in South Omaha, just before noon Friday.

OPD says officers found the man, 54, dead “amid suspicious circumstances” in the report.

His death is now under investigation by the OPD Homicide Unit. Anyone with information is asked to contact Omaha Crime Stoppers at 402-444-7867, their website, or the P3 Tips app.

One arrested in connection to fatal stabbing of 85-year-old man in Millard

One person has been arrested after a stabbing in Millard that left a man dead Thursday evening.

On Friday, police gave an update in a report that states the man who died Thursday was 85-year-old Sung Pae.

William Pae, 53, was arrested for criminal homicide in connection to the stabbing, the report states.

Officers were called to the incident just after 6 p.m. Thursday to 185th Avenue and Polk Street, just north of Harrison Street.

Woman in critical condition after shooting in North Omaha, OPD says

The Omaha Police Department was on the scene after a shooting in North Omaha on Friday afternoon.

Police were called to the incident at Florence Blvd. and Sprague Street shortly after 1:30 p.m. Friday.

An OPD official says a 41-year-old woman was taken to the hospital in critical condition.

According to dispatch notes, a man claimed that he accidentally shot the woman in the incident.

Dozens in Omaha use 4th of July to protest passage of ‘Big Beautiful Bill’

While many families are spent the 4th of July at barbeques or parades, some in Omaha used the holiday as a way to speak out.

Friday morning, a group of nearly 50 protestors stood on the overpass between Elmwood and Memorial parks.

Protestors told us they used holiday that celebrates the Nation’s independence to highlight what they believe in. Many of their signs were directly protesting against the Big Beautiful Big, passed in Congress, and its potential cuts to healthcare access for Americans.

When First Alert 6 spoke with people in the area, some said they were glad the bill was passed and believe it will have positive impacts on the country and Nebraskans.

Elkhorn schools team up to sell fireworks as fundraiser for marching bands

On the football field, Elkhorn High School and Elkhorn North are crosstown rivals.

But on Friday, the two schools worked together and sold fireworks to help the students who take the field at halftime of football games, parades, and contests.

The money they make selling the fireworks will be divided between the two schools to help their marching bands.

“This is one of our largest fundraisers of the year for our band booster organization. It helps supplement quite a bit of funding for our marching show, our concert program, our jazz program,” Kyle Dressen, the band director at Elkhorn High School said. “It’s an integral part of our fundraising process for our band music organization.”

School officials tell First Alert 6 they are doing well this year with their sale of fireworks. They say Elkhorn schools are one of the highest performing firework tents in the metro.
