One dead, two in critical condition after South Omaha crash Thursday

One person is dead and two people are in critical condition after a single-vehicle crash early Thursday in the South Omaha area.

Police were called to the crash near 13th and M streets just before 2:30 a.m. Thursday.

An OPD official confirmed with First Alert 6 around 5 a.m. Thursday that one person was pronounced dead at the scene as a result of the crash. The others were taken to the hospital with critical injuries.

Police say speed is being investigated as a possible factor in the incident.

Three teens arrested in Omaha homicide case appear in court

Three teens arrested in an Omaha homicide investigation have made their first appearances in court.

Tamarri Neal, 18, was formally charged in court Wednesday with first-degree murder, first-degree assault, and two counts of use of a weapon to commit a felony. A 16-year-old male suspect was also in court on Wednesday and is facing the same charges.

Both teens have a preliminary hearing set for July 30 and are being held without bond.

Ken’Toryon Gunn, also 18, was in court last Friday and formally charged with accessory to a felony. His preliminary hearing is scheduled for July 28, and he is being held on a $50,000 bond.

The court appearances come in connection to the shooting death of 19-year-old Ashtin Fletcher on June 8 near 62nd and Camden Avenue.

Nebraska Governor signs bill targeting foreign governments into law

On Wednesday, Nebraska Gov. Jim Pillen signed bill aimed at curbing the influence of foreign adversaries in the state.

LB644, introduced by Sen. Bostar, will require anyone in Nebraska acting on behalf of an adversarial nation to the United States to register with the state. Bostar said many governments from adversarial nations try to spread their influence in Nebraska.

First Alert 6’s Ron Johnson reports that at the signing, Pillen specifically mentioned Iran, China, Russia, North Korea, Cuba, and Venezuela as adversarial nations.

Anyone who doesn’t comply with the new law would have to pay a $50,000 fine. It will take effect in September.

Nebraska Medical Cannabis Commission meeting to be held Thursday

The second meeting for the newly-formed Nebraska Medical Cannabis Commission will be held Thursday.

The commission is responsible for setting the rules for growing and selling medical marijuana in Nebraska after voters overwhelmingly passed two measures on the issue in November.

Dr. Monica Oldenburg and Lorelle Mueting, as well as three members of the state Liquor Control Commission, make up the panel.

On the schedule for Thursday’s meeting is to address the commission budget, rule making, and regulations. It has two regulation-oriented deadlines to hit: July 1 and Oct. 1.

The meeting will start at 10 a.m. in Lincoln, and is open to the public.

Metro Community College to hold groundbreaking ceremony Thursday

Metropolitan Community College is set to break ground on its new campus in Sarpy County on Thursday.

The campus will be MCC’s first full-service campus addition in 45 years, according to a release. It will be located near the I-80 interchange at Highways 50 and 370 in Papillion.

The groundbreaking event will start at 10 a.m. Thursday.

Preparations underway for Memorial Park concert in Omaha

The City of Omaha will hold the annual Memorial Park Concert on Friday with Ringo Starr, one of The Beatles, as the headliner.

Tens of thousands of people are expected to attend the concert, which is free to the public. Mike Campbell and The Dirty Knobs will also perform.

Concert-goers are reminded that they can set up their blankets to reserve their spot starting at 5 a.m. Friday. No tarps or tents are allowed.

The show begins with The National Anthem at 6:30 p.m. with Starr taking the stage around 8:30 p.m. After the concert, the event will end with the firework show finale.
