70 people were injured when twelve cars, a truck and a bus collided on the N1 in Pretoria on Saturday night.
Emer-G-Med paramedics arrived at the scene just after 19H00 to find the multi-vehicle collision on the N1 highway near Garsfontein.
TWELVE CARS, A TRUCK AND A BUS COLLIDE
Reports from the scene are that twelve cars, a truck and a bus collided. As many as seventy people were injured, said Emer-G-Med.
“Incident command officers established an on-scene triage area and further investigations revealed one patient to be in a critical condition.”
The critical patient required advanced life support to stabilise him before he was airlifted to a specialist facility for the care that he required.
“The remaining patients were treated on scene and transported by ambulances to various nearby hospitals for further medical care,” said Emer-G-Med.3
ACCIDENT LEADS TO MAJOR TRAFFIC
The accident has led to major traffic in the area due to the closed highway. Motorists have complained on social media of waiting more than two hours on the road.
The cause of the collision is unknown and will be investigated by police, Emer-G-Med said.
ANOTHER N1 ACCIDENT TAKES A LIFE
Meanwhile, a man was killed on the N1 outside Polokwane when a bakkie and a truck collided on Friday.
ER24 and other emergency services arrived at the scene just before 08:00 to find the bakkie on the road while the truck had stopped in the emergency lane a distance away.
“On closer inspection, medics found a man lying trapped inside the bakkie in a critical condition. Rescue Services had to use specialised equipment to free the man from the bakkie. Once released, medics treated the man and provided him with advanced life support before he was transported to MediClinic Limpopo for urgent care.”
The man, unfortunately, succumbed to his injuries in hospital. The driver of the truck walked out unscathed.
