Reported coronavirus cases statewide for the week of Aug. 3 increased slightly, to 2,158. That’s an increase of 62 reported cases since the 2,096 reported the week of July 27, a 2.95% increase.
In the 10 communities covered by The Sun Chronicle in the week ending Aug. 3, reported cases increased by 3, from 53 to 56, or 5.65%.
The communities are: Attleboro, North Attleboro, Foxboro, Mansfield, Norfolk, Norton, Plainville, Rehoboth, Seekonk and Wrentham.
In week 25 of 2024, the reported cases exceeded the 22 recorded on June 29 by 34.
The last 26 weeks statewide, the number has gone from 4,999 to 2,158 cases, which is a decrease of 43.16%. That percentage has shrunk over the last eight weeks, from 88.79% to 56.89%, a decrease of 31.95%.
In the week ending Aug. 3, none of the 10 local communities reported zero cases.
There were 313 coronavirus tests administered by medical professionals in the 10 communities covered by The Sun Chronicle, with 56 positives. That’s an increase of 28 tests from the 285 recorded in the week of July 27.
The exact number of positive cases is unknown, however because many people are not even bothering testing at home now and even if they are, and test positive, aren’t reporting the results to health officials as COVID symptoms are much weaker.
For context, the highest number of new cases statewide for one week was recorded on Jan. 14, 2022, at 132,557. The highest number locally for one week was 3,463, recorded on Jan. 13, 2022.
All told, since the beginning of the pandemic in March 2020, the area has recorded 51,254 cases. That’s 25.49% of the 200,793 population in the 10 communities covered by The Sun Chronicle.
Percentages of the disease in each community range from 22% to 29% (rounded up) and the average is 24.90%
Norfolk is the lowest, at 22.17%, and Attleboro the highest, at 28.88%.

Statewide, the number was 2,158 confirmed cases, with 771 probable cases.
The number of confirmed deaths statewide for the week of Aug. 3 was 11, and the number of probable deaths was 3.
The number of confirmed and probable coronavirus cases since March 2020 is 2,173,543.
The number of confirmed deaths since March 2020 is 23,543, and the number of confirmed and probable deaths is 30,018.
A recent poll for the 10 communities covered by The Sun Chronicle reported the total number of deaths at 520. That’s a death rate of 1.02%.
