Maryland reports first human case of West Nile virus for 2024
An adult from the Baltimore area tested positive as the first human case of West Nile virus this year in Maryland, state health officials said Monday.According to the Maryland Department of Health, the patient has recovered from the infection.Mosquitoes that feed on birds that have the virus transmit West Nile to humans. In rare instances, the virus can be spread from person to person through organ donation, blood transfusion, breastfeeding or from pregnant mother to fetus.The disease affects the nervous system, and up to 80% of people who are infected will not display any signs of illness.Some people may experience mild symptoms, such as fever, headache and body aches. Occasionally, they may develop a skin rash and swollen lymph glands.Symptoms can last a few days or as long as several weeks. People who are older than 50 or have immunocompromised conditions can become seriously ill.
