The India Islamic Cultural Centre (IICC) Monday hosted a memorial meeting for Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah. The event was attended by Iranian Ambassador to India Dr Iraj Elahi and Palestinian envoy to India Adnan Abu Al-Hija, among other invitees.
Iranian Ambassador Iraj Elahi said that Hezbollah should not be seen as a terrorist outfit but a political party with a military wing. He added that Hezbollah had provided ministers to the Lebanese cabinet. He said that while Hezbollah was a legitimate and legal political party, it had a military branch, which worked for the protection of the Lebanese people.
Meanwhile, Palestinian envoy Adnan Abu Al-Hija recalled the days in Lebanon before the emergence of Hezbollah and recounted Israel’s attack on Beirut in 1982.
He said that the withdrawal of the multinational forces from Beirut led to the death of hundreds of civilians in the aftermath. Al-Hija emphasised that Hezbollah was born out of the need to protect Lebanon from Israel’s attacks.
