Ann Widdecombe’s messages to producer just minutes before death

Ann Widdecombe’s final messages to a TV producer have been released after her death on July 8. The former Conservative Party MP was found dead at her home with serious injuries on July 8. A murder investigation was started by police who arrested a 26-year-old white male on suspicion of murder. He has since been released. A 28-year-old white British man has now been arrested on suspicion of murder in South Yorkshire.

Fears over Widdecombe‘s wellbeing were flagged when she did not show up for a media appearance. She had been speaking with producers about a Zoom meeting link before her death. In a text chain shared by PoliticsUK, the 78-year-old said she had received the meeting link before her death.

One text to producers at Channel 5 reads: “We spoke. Sorry for the confusion. I can see now that what I refused today was extra time!! Old age is a terrible thing.” Her last text to producers was just half an hour before she was meant to make a media appearance.

An unnamed person wrote: “Just sent to this address, let me know if you’ve got it.” Widdecombe replied: “Received! Panic over!!” What followed is three texts to Widdecombe and three attempts to call the ex-Conservative Party MP.

The producer wrote: “Amazing! Let me know if there’s any issues. Hi Ann could you join the Zoom now please. Hi Ann is everything okay?”

Widdecombe was last seen alive during a Talk TV interview at 8am the same day she had been organising media appearances for the Matt Allwright show.

Devon and Cornwall Police said yesterday (Saturday) it is believed Widdecombe was attacked on Wednesday at around 12.30pm. Assistant Chief Constable Matt Longman said her death is being treated as suspicious but added: “We do not believe there is a wider risk to the public. Our inquiries are moving at pace for a suspect who is believed to be a white male.”

Widdecombe, who was 78, was first elected a Conservative MP in Kent in 1987, went on to serve as an MEP for the Brexit Party and then a spokeswoman for Reform UK.
