Asda hopes to build new ‘town centre’ with 60,000 squre foot flagship store

A major supermarket chain has shared plans to convert an existing superstore into a new “town centre” development, with a flagship store at the hub.

Asda’s plans include up to 1,500 new homes and EV parking spots. The chain has proposed to convert its existing Park Royal site, in north-west London, into a 60,000 sq ft site which will host homes, retail spaces and restaurants.

The plans also include a 35-storey apartment block, fitness facilities and a community hub.

This is the first time the Asda has planned the redevelop an established store site.

The firm has said that it “represents one of the largest land deals of the last couple of years.”

Of the 1,500 new homes that have been proposed for the site, about 500 are planned to be sold as affordable housing.

“This allows us the opportunity to better serve local communities like Park Royal, with a new flagship store fit for the future, whilst creating windfall sites for housing delivery,” said Ian Lawrence, head of mixed-use developments at Asda.

Work on the planning application underway and is scheduled to be submitted later this year.

Asda added that its existing Park Royal Superstore would remain open while the new project is under development.

The chain has recently opened its 479th Asda Express store, reaching a total of 1,000 sites across the UK.

The supermarket also plans to open “standalone” locations across the country as part of its ongoing growth ambition, The Sun reports.
