Animals on the busy streets of Mumbai already face daily challenges trying to make it through the day, but without help, countless tiny kittens wouldn’t stand a chance. Thankfully, our partner IDA India has a dedicated ward for them, where they get all the love and care they need.
The kittens in this ward are sadly motherless. Most of them are abandoned at the gate of our Deonar Center by people who think they’re a nuisance. Many come in critically ill, but they each receive the best veterinary care possible.
They require round-the-clock care, which is handled with great dedication by our Animal Welfare Assistant, Anusuya Gambhire, who we call Anu. Despite health challenges she faces herself, she always puts the kittens first and gives them all her love and attention (she’s wearing a pink shirt in the video).
While most are abandoned here, some are brought in by caring members of the public, who bring them in for treatment and take them back. We always advise them to bring them back for Animal Birth Control when they’re old enough.
Sadly, very few survive without their mother, regardless of how much care we provide, but those who do remain with us and join our shelter family. Right now, we have 60 cats who are permanent residents.
There isn’t much interest in adopting Indie kittens in India; most people are more interested in breeds like Persian and Siamese, but we have also successfully helped some of those get adopted.
Still, we endeavor to give every kitten who comes to us the love, warmth, and care they deserve. Anu plays a truly irreplaceable role in this, and we’re forever grateful to her for the time and effort she puts into caring for these tiny lives.
