Horror as Dad, 84, found covered in blood after drunk son attacks him

A drunk man who violently attacked his 84-year-old father after a drinking session at the pub has been jailed. Police officers found Ian Griffin’s dad sitting in a chair covered in blood at his own address on the evening of May 1 last year.

The 84-year-old revealed that Griffin had assaulted him for the past 30 minutes to an hour. Cheshire Police said the victim was clearly terrified by the ordeal and relieved to see the officers. Griffin claimed his parents had had a fight, but his own hands were covered in blood and the living room had considerable damage.

It transpired that, after consuming alcohol, Griffin had returned from the pub to his parents address where he violently attacked his father causing multiple injuries.

He was immediately arrested and taken into custody while his father was taken to hospital to be treated for his injuries.

Ian Griffin, 57, pleaded guilty to wounding without intent and criminal damage. He was sentenced to five years in prison with an extended year on license in addition to restraining orders at Liverpool Crown Court on September 14.

DC Alex Clephan said: “Following a drinking session at a local pub, Griffin flew into a rage and carried out a brutal and prolonged attack on his elderly father. His actions caused significant physical and emotional harm to those closest to him.

“As a result of his conduct, he is now facing the consequences of his actions, and measures, including a restraining order, have been put in place to safeguard his parents from any further harm.”

While GBH with intent can carry a maximum sentence of life imprisonment, the same offence committed without intent has a maximum sentence of five years.

Cases deemed to have a higher culpability, such as targeting a vulnerable person, are handed the longer sentences. In this case, Griffin was handed the maximum for GBH without intent.
