A medium-intensity earthquake measuring 5.2 on the Richter scale struck J&K on Sunday as no casualties or property damage was immediately reported anywhere.
Residents of the city of Srinagar felt the quake and some ran from their houses in panic.
Official sources said that a medium-intensity earthquake measuring 5.2 on the Richter scale occurred in J&K at 11:19 am with a latitude of 36.54 degrees north and a longitude of 71.13 degrees east.
“The epicenter of the earthquake was in the border region between Afghanistan and Tajikistan and its depth was 220 kilometers into the earth.
Earthquakes have wreaked havoc in Kashmir in the past, as the region is very seismologically sensitive.
On October 8, 2005, an earthquake measuring 7.6 on the Richter scale killed more than 48,000 people on both sides of the Line of Control (LoC) in Kashmir.
