Why is Starfield 30FPS? Space sandwiches, probably

After years of speculation, star field Director Todd Howard recently confirmed that the open-world RPG only runs at 30fps on Xbox Series X/S, where is a console exclusive. While some fans were immediately dismayed, others have pointed out that there’s probably a good reason for capping the game’s framerate lower than other “next-gen” games like Forza Motorsport and spider man 2and it probably has to do with the sandwiches.

When Howard confirmed the lower frame rate in a Interview with IGN, said the goal was to keep performance consistent and prioritize images. “I think it won’t come as a surprise, given our previous games, what we’re looking for: always these huge, fully dynamic, hyper-detailed open worlds where anything can happen,” he said. “We block it at 30, because we want that fidelity, we want all of those things.”

But it came as a surprise to at least some fans who believed that part of the promise of “next-gen” consoles like the Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5 was to enjoy higher frame rates, as those gamers with more expensive gaming PCs typically do. They’re used to it. And with red drop‘s poor launch and a promised 60fps performance mode not arrive until some time latersome gamers began to speculate that the frame rate restriction meant Bethesda’s space RPG wasn’t finished in some way.

So what does food have to do with all of this? Good, star fieldis the first big teaser trailer at E3 2021 featured a half-eaten sandwich sitting on a table next to a sci-fi pistol and thermos aboard the player’s spaceship. The fans fell in love with him—one even made up a real life recipe—and has become an iconic part of the game’s pre-launch marketing ever since, including during the most recent Xbox Showcase.

footage during the star field Direct showed an entire table full of sandwiches, with producer Jamie Mallory tell viewers that one of his favorite things to do in the game is steal everyone’s sandwiches and store them in the cargo hold of his ship. Consistent with previous Bethesda RPGs like old documents and Fall, the implication was that players could pick up tons of random items in the world, add them to their inventory, and then deposit them elsewhere. but unlike skyrim either Fall, star field features thousands of planets that you can visit instead of just one map.

“Though used as a joke in the video, this pirate sandwich concept highlights one of the reasons why 60fps would be hard to achieve.” digital foundry Analyst John Linneman wrote on Twitter. “Like the previous BGS titles, it seems that star field tracks the location and position of arbitrary items in the world. Given the scope, these things start to add up. The player has so much freedom in this regard that it presumably becomes impossible to keep the frame budget below 16ms. Lowering the resolution wouldn’t make it possible.”

Dannie Carlone, an artist in god of war ragnarok at Sony Santa Monica, he also opined. “60 fps at this scale would be a big hit for visual fidelity,” he said. wrote on Twitter, rejecting criticism that 30 fps indicated the game was “unfinished” in some way. “I guess they want to go for a perfect appearance and less ‘show up’.” In a follow-up tweet, he speculated that the frame rate and resolution on the Xbox Series X/S was an intentional tradeoff to improve image quality. “They want to keep it locked to 30 4k and push the visuals up a notch at this scale.”

Linneman echoed this in the last “tech breakdown” episode of digital foundry Looking at star fieldThe most recent images of . “It all comes down to what the developer is trying to do, basically the maximum frame rate with which they can achieve their vision,” he said. Speculating that the game’s performance bottleneck is likely on the CPU end due to all the complex interlocking systems and persistent objects in the world, Linneman argued that it’s likely a testament to what the rest of the game is trying to do. to do instead of a deficiency of the technology behind it.

Xbox Game Studios boss Matt Booty has already promised star field will be from Bethesda game release with fewer bugsand if it can look as good as some of the 4K games shown on the recent trailerit will be an impressive achievement.
