The government’s crackdown on a banned coalition of eight opposition parties began shortly after the departure of US Secretary of State George Shultz.
Shock Cong-IPC(M)
Eleven people were killed and five seriously injured in an orgy of violence in the Malda district. The spokesman for the state committee of the CPI-(M) stated that all the victims were sympathizers of his party. The party alleged that armed supporters of Congress (I) had raided the town. In total, 45 houses were set on fire.
Punjab dissidents
Darbara Singh plans to remove three dissidents from his ministry. Sources in the Chief Minister’s camp revealed that he was likely to discuss the matter with Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. Darbara Singh is flying to Delhi for a meeting with his Haryana counterpart, Bhajan Lal, called by Home Minister PC Sethi in connection with the dispute over the supply of water from Bhakra to chandigarh and its satellite cities of Mohali and Panchkula.

United States in Khalistan
The United States is believed to have assured India that the US administration will not encourage the protagonists of the Khalistan movement. The security was given by the US Secretary of State, George Shultz, during his meeting with Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, in New Delhi.
