New South Wales has plenty of wonderful destinations to visit. And while the desert to the west and the subtropical north might be a tad too far for a long weekend escape, there are a slew of spots closer to home in Sydney ready to explore. Here, we’ve rounded up a few of our favourites.

Palm Beach and the far Northern Beaches

There’s something simple and beautiful about Sydney’s Pittwater region. While still within the city limits, renting a cabin on the water off Palm Beach or Church Point will make you feel as though you‘ve been transported a million miles away from traffic or bustle. And in summer, it proves the perfect spot to relax in silence without a long drive.

The NSW South Coast

Sweeping beaches and rolling hills … It doesn’t get more idyllic than the South Coast. With plenty to choose from, favourites like Mollymook, Milton and Bateman’s Bay are winners for those wanting to laze out — no matter the season.

Killcare and the lower Central Coast

Killcare on the Central Coast is just over an hour from Sydney, making it an ideal weekend escape. Luxury boutique hotels like Pretty Beach House and Bells prove chic destinations to escape the grind and are equal parts romantic and relaxing.

The Blue Mountains

Whether you head upward to Leura or Blackheath, or opt instead for Bilpin’s recently scorched but recovering apple orchards, there’s lots to love about a weekend away in the mountains. Rent a home with a fireplace in winter, or a place with a sweeping deck in the summer for barbecues and plan a few bush walks followed by feasting on cheese plates — and wine, of course.

Orange

The Central West’s wine gem, Orange, is well worth a weekend trip away. A three-hour drive from Sydney through the Blue Mountains, a trip to Orange is one filled with food, wine and more food. Head to the farmers markets and dine at one of the many award-winning restaurants, or wine hop through the vineyards with friends.

The Southern Highlands

Something of an inland Hamptons, the NSW Southern Highlands is the ultimate place to indulge in a luxurious weekend away. From wine sipping at elegant restaurants in Bowral to antique hopping, rent yourself a cozy farmhouse and settle down.
