The days are getting shorter, but that doesn’t mean there’s any lack of things to fill them with this month. You might already feel like you’re recovering from the Easter long weekend-come-early, or perhaps you’re feeling well-rested after some well-deserved time off. Whatever the case, we’ve got you covered with a state-by-state guide to all the cool, fun, entertaining and interesting events happening this month across the country.

 

NSW

Plate It Forward’s Kyiv Social will host their first free monthly laneway party ‘Beers and Bangers’ on Sunday 7 April in Grafton Lane to celebrate both Australian and Ukrainian culture. The event will kick off with Ukrainian House DJs, beers from Young Henrys and sausages by LP’s Quality Meats.

Dale Frank’s solo exhibition ‘Growers and Showers’ is set to be unveiled at the National Art School on 12 April.

Revolutionising the dating experience, Cupid’s Club are hosting their third event on 19 April at Harry’s in Surry Hills. If you’re tired of the monotony of dating apps and the awkwardness of speed dating, their events offer a refreshing alternative for singles looking to meet like-minded individuals in a fun, relaxed atmosphere.

It’s your last week to see the Triennial at NGV this week, where you can see the works of 120 artists, designers and collectives at the forefront of global contemporary art practice. Entry to the exhibition (which ends on 7 April) is free, too!

Archibald Prize-winner Julia Gutman is showing her first Melbourne solo show at Sullivan + Strumpf’s Collingwood gallery this month. ‘Everyone You Are Looking at is Also You’ will be open to the public through til 27 April.

Missy Higgins, the Aussie music icon herself, will be playing a gig at the Canberra Theatre we wouldn’t miss on Wednesday 10 April.

Canberra Theatre Centre will be showing DARKFIELD: SÉANCE until 14 April, an intense sonic performance that explores the psychology of suggestibility in complete darkness.

AGSA is still showing the 18th Adelaide Biennial of Australian Art: Inner Sanctum this month, which offers a snapshot of the contemporary art landscape featuring works by the likes of Jazz Money, Clara Adolphs, James Barth, Christopher Bassi and more.

Grammy-award winning James Taylor is playing at the Adelaide Entertainment Centre on 19 April.

Holy Holy are also playing in town at the Hindley St Music Hall on Friday 5 April.

 

WA

Kita Alexander kicks of the tour of her debut album, Young in Love, in Perth on Friday 12 April at the Rosemount Hotel.

James Cameron’s ‘Challenging the Deep’ exhibition continues at the WA Maritime Museum, a major immersive exhibition that traces the filmmaker’s achievements in deep ocean science, and record-breaking submersible dives.

Parrtjima, the country’s only authentic Aboriginal light festival of it’s kind, is on from 12 – 21 April, showcasing the oldest continuous culture on earth through the newest technology – all on the 300-million-year-old natural canvas of the MacDonnell Ranges in Central Australia.

NT Writer’s is hosting a weekend writing retreat from 5–7 April. Bask in the beautiful surroundings of Campfire in the Heart on Arrernte country in this fully catered, self-guided writing retreat.

Echo & Bounce are hosting the latest iteration of Tempo Comodo on 14 April: a night dedicated to the slower realms of dance music curated by DJ Phil Smart. The open-air dance event is free entry and features a lineup of local Brisbane DJs.

Brisbane Record Fair is happening again on 13 April at Coorparoo Square. Enjoy free on-site parking, hot coffee and breakfast options, and channel your inner crate shark.

Catch Psychedelic Porn Crumpets on 11 April at Mo’s Desert House in the Gold Coast.

Pacific Avenue are playing a gig at Hobart Uni Bar on 6 April.

The Fashion Thrift Society are Hobart’s Biggest Second-Hand Fashion Market on Sunday 7 April, where you can browse over 200 carefully curated stalls, offering an extensive selection of vintage and preloved clothing items.
