Election Day is here, and Colorado residents can still register to vote or cast ballots for a number of key local, state and federal races and questions.
While it’s too late for Coloradans to return their ballots by mail, individuals still have a variety of options to cast their votes. Registered voters can return their ballots in person until 7 p.m. on election night at official drop boxes or vote in person at polling centers on Election Day — Tuesday, Nov. 3 — from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
It’s also not too late to register to vote. In Colorado, residents can register on Election Day in person at the county’s voter service and polling center.
A list of polling places and ballot drop boxes can be found at GoVoteColorado.gov.
Voters who have already mailed or dropped off their ballots can check its status via BallotTrax at BallotTrax.ColoradoSOS.gov.
“Ballots must be returned to a drop box or voter center or received by your county clerk by mail, by 7 p.m. on Election Day. After that, election workers will continue to count ballots, voters can correct signature discrepancies, and the statewide audit is held to confirm the results,” said Colorado Secretary of State Jena Griswold in a news release. “Colorado’s election officials work diligently to ensure the process remains secure, accurate, and transparent.”
County clerks will begin reporting preliminary votes as polls close Tuesday, with official results being reported in the following weeks as counts are certified.
This year’s midterm election has seen a surge in early turnout, particularly compared to the previous 2022 midterm. As of Nov. 1, 39% of active registered voters had returned their ballots or cast their vote, a nearly 20% increase from one day before the 2022 midterm election, according to data from the Secretary of State’s office. This is down by nearly 25% over the 2024 presidential election year.
This early turnout is reflected in several Northwest Colorado counties as well. By Nov. 1, around 46% of Grand County active registered voters had returned their ballots, 42% of registered voters in Routt and Pitkin counties, 41% of active Summit County voters, 40% of active voters in Garfield County, 39% of Eagle County active voters and 30% of Moffat County active voters.
In 2022, around 66% of Colorado’s active registered voters ultimately cast a vote in the midterm election. In 2024, turnout of active registered voters was 81% after the polls closed.
