An unpopular high-rise building in Durban could soon be destroyed – after the Save Our Berea group intensified their fight against developments on a structure, which has previously been labelled as a ‘monstrosity’.

The building, which is 317 on Currie Road, has been under development for years. The ownership has changed hands several times, with multiple claims of fraud and corruption plaguing the construction. Activists looking to prevent the addition of a ninth story to the high-rise can now also rely on some star power…
Salim Abdool Karim – yes, the epidemiologist – has produced an affidavit to help prevent further work on 317, and he is now firmly in the camp that wants to see its destruction. The Durban resident has described the property as an eye-sore.
“Although it was an eye-sore, the extent of the impact on me was limited. But I became concerned when, in September last year, work resumed and it became apparent that in addition unsightly storeys were being added…and it would have a substantial and direct impact on my property. citizens should take a stance against maladministration.â€
Litigation awaits contesting parties
The Durban High Court must now decide what steps are taken next. The judiciary will be tasked with making a final ruling, in a saga that has dragged on for the best part of seven years. Investigations into maladministration continue. The city has not yet filed papers for the matter, and 317’s current owners aren’t expecting the matter to be properly heard until April.
