AAA’s travel tips and recommendations for Labor Day Weekend

Wis. (WJFW)- While some schools may already be back in session, others don’t start until after the Labor Day holiday weekend. Overall, domestic travel over Labor Day weekend is up 9% compared to last year, while the cost to travel domestically is down 2%. Gas prices are always a concern for travelers and this year they are lower at $3.23 for a regular gallon, than they were at the same time last year at $3.57.

“Prices throughout the summer have been kind of bumping up and down depending on some refinery issues that we’ve seen in the Midwest, but overall they’re lower then they were this time last month, they’re lower then they were at this time last year,” said Nick Jarmusz, the Director of Public Affairs at AAA.

Jarmusz also says that travelers should plan ahead of their departure due to the risk of increased traffic during Thursday and Friday.

“The best time to hit the road is gonna be in the morning pretty much any day of the weekend, pre noon hours are going to be better, traffic is gonna be highest in the mid to late afternoon into the early evening particularly Thursday and Friday, that’s when we expect the worst of the traffic to be,” said Jarmusz.

Drivers are reminded to be courteous of emergency responders and roadside assistance workers who may be on the road assisting those in need.

“Not getting behind the wheel impaired, not being distracted, slow down, we’ve seen a big increase in speed related crashes in the last few years so we really encourage everyone to watch their speed, and also watch out for emergency responders that’ll still be working throughout the weekend,” said Jarmusz.
