Overview

The Maritime INDIA @ Net Zero workshop commenced on January 14–15, 2026, marking a pivotal milestone in India’s maritime decarbonization journey. The inaugural session, opened by a traditional lamp-lighting ceremony, brought together leaders from government, industry, and academia to shape the National Green Shipping Policy (NGSP).

Keynote speaker Mr. RR Rashmi, Distinguished Fellow, TERI, contextualized the energy transition, while Shri Shyam Jagannathan, Director General of Shipping, and Shri Rajesh Sinha, Special Secretary, Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, outlined the strategic architecture and urgent necessity of the NGSP in response to evolving global climate regulations.

Key Focus Areas of the Report

The report adopts a systematic, data-driven framework that goes beyond conceptual discussions to deliver actionable insights for the maritime sector. It provides a granular analysis of:

  • Demand-Supply Dynamics: Evaluating current and projected market availability for green alternatives.
  • Fuel Mix Scenarios: Identifying viable alternative fuel pathways for India’s shipping fleet.
  • Retrofitting & Engine Replacement: Mapping out the economic and technical transitions required for existing vessels.
  • Immediate Blend-Fuel Options: Highlighting drop-in fuel solutions that can be implemented seamlessly without requiring major engine modifications.

Next Steps: Moving into Phase II

With the baseline architecture established in Part A, the immediate priority shifts to the development of Phase II. This next phase will focus on a comprehensive implementation plan establishing short-, medium-, and long-term action points for both coastal and foreign-going vessels.

Executing Phase II will require close coordination among the Directorate General of Shipping, the NCoEGPS Green Fuel team, and relevant technical and classification institutions. Implementation will be systematically driven by data-driven compliance mechanisms, taking into strict consideration:

  • Vessel typologies and size categories.
  • Fuel standards and certification frameworks.
