AFL 2022 round 2 LIVE updates: Carlton Blues defeat Western Bulldogs as Cripps dominates

Sam Walsh spoke to Channel Seven post game.

Aren’t you supposed to be injured for another month?

Supposedly so! I’ve had a really positive rehab. Had a lot of people help me out, and I always knew I was going to try and push the limit a little bit but I had to be confident to play. That’s what I felt. So it’s even better to finish it off with a win.

What do you love about tonight?

First of all, being out there with the boys. I’ve been watching the last three or four matches. You want to start building that identity. I feel like you do that over a period of time, and I think for me, I just wanted to add to that group and the mids are working so well. Positive signs, we have to keep going.

You speak about identity. What is it? What’s the main focus in all of that?

I think we just want to be reliable team- mates to each other, consistent each week and when fans rock up to the game you just want to see us play tough footy. That’s the barometer and you can always control that and I feel like we’re doing that well at the moment, but as you know, you need to do that consistently over the season. Looking forward to keeping on going

There may have been a moment or two when the Blues got nervous but you were able to settle and find a way forward?

I think so. Probably a few kicks and stuff we wish we had back but when you have guys like Jacob Weitering that front up contests, sometimes tonight we lost the contest but we won the next one. If we can keep doing that and play the ball in our half, it will make it easier for us.

Talking about the week, how different it must’ve been. Vossy has been away. You have lost Jack Martin and Adam Cerra. Vossy on Zoom. You have a new coach, a new voice, but everything has stayed the same?

It has been a weird week. AFL footy, no week is the same. Ash is a ripper. He come from Doggies last year.

The connection between you and Cripps, that combination that popped up so many times tonight, how often have we seen you guys working closely together over the pre-season?

It’s become natural. He is a gem to shape off. Once you can read what those guys are doing, for me, as a receiver,

Talk us through what you see in Patrick Cripps’ game?

He is a dual threat. He rocks up to every contest within an aggressive mindset and it’s hard to go wrong when you’re doing that. As a whole mid group, we’ve been trying to focus on being sharp around the ball.

Did you know George Hewett was as good as he is?

He’s played outstanding. I honestly didn’t even see that coming. I have a good mate that plays at Sydney and he raves about him and I can see why. He just fronts up every day at the club, keeps a pretty low profile. Even his tackling and presence and Matty Kennedy alongside him. We are building a group.
