After threat calls, Assam CM security tightened

Assam Prime Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s security was tightened after several journalists in the state received recorded calls allegedly threatening him.

In the recorded call received by several journalists, the speaker identifies himself as Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, one of the founders of the US separatist organization Sikhs for Justice (SFJ). However, Assam Inspector General (Law and Order) Prasanta Kumar Bhuyan said the police have yet to determine how many of those people have received these calls.

“This message is for Assam CM Himanta Sarma. His government is harassing and torturing pro-Khalistan Sikhs in Assam and also torturing those in jail. Listen very carefully CM Sarma. The fight is between the pro-Khalistan Sikhs and the Indian regime and Modi. Sarma, do not fall prey to this violence. We are seeking the liberation of Punjab from Indian occupation through the peaceful democratic process of the Khalistan referendum. Sarma, if your government is going to torture and harass Sikhs, you will be held accountable…” the speaker says in the recorded call.

This comes after eight aides of fugitive pro-Khalistani preacher Amritpal Singh were brought from Punjab to Assam. Dibrugarh Central Jail.

Following complaints from journalists, the Assam police registered a case.
