Egyptian Premier League champions Zamalek have confirmed they were also trying to sign Bafana Bafana star Percy Tau prior to the midfielder penning a deal with bitter rivals Al Ahly.
Tau moved last week from English Premier League side Brighton & Hove Albion to Al Ahly on a four-year deal where he reunited with his former coach at Mamelodi Sundowns, Pitso Mosimane.
News about Zamalek’s interest in Tau came from Egyptian publication KingFut who confirmed Zamalek board member Hussein El-Sayed said in a TV interview that had it not been for a financial crisis they would have signed the 27-year-old Tau.
“We have cases against us that accumulate to up to $17.5 million, and the amount has been reduced to nearly $4 million,” El-Sayed told Sada El-Balad TV.
“If it weren’t for the crisis we have with the late dues, we would have bought Percy Tau from Brighton,” he said.
Zamalek claimed the 2020/21 Egyptian Premier League title last week by four points, dethroning Al Ahly as champions of Egypt.
