Alanna Smith to Represent Australia in 2024 Paris Olympics

Another Minnesota Lynx player will represent her country during the WNBA’s upcoming Olympic Break, taking the court at the 2024 Paris Olympics spanning from July 26-Aug. 11.

Along with the already-announced roster inclusions of Napheesa Collier with the United States and Bridget Carleton with Canada, Lynx forward Alanna Smith will suit up once again for her country at the Olympic Games.

Basketball Australia announced Saturday that Smith was named to the Seven Consulting Australian Opals team set to represent Australia in Paris.

The Hobart, Australia native will be taking part in her second consecutive Olympic appearance after previously playing for Australia in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. Four years ago, Smith appeared in all four games for her home country, which was led by New York Liberty head coach Sandy Brondello, who will serve as Australia’s head coach again in 2024.

In February, Smith was part of the Australian squad that secured their 10th Olympic appearance during the 2024 FIBA Women’s Olympic Qualifying Tournament in Brazil, where they finished 3-0. In those three contests, Smith averaged 3.7 points and 5.0 rebounds in 11.2 minutes per contest.

Smith has shined in her first season with the Lynx in 2024 after signing with the organization last offseason as a free agent. In 21 games, all starts, Smith is averaging career-high marks with 11.8 points, 5.1 rebounds, 3.1 assists, 2 blocks and 1.3 steals in 28 minutes per game. She currently ranks fourth in the WNBA in 3-point percentage with a career-best 45.6% while posting a field goal percentage of 48.9%.

Smith and Team Australia will kick off the 2024 Paris Olympics on July 29 when they begin Group B play against Nigeria. Australia will take on Carleton and Canada on Aug. 1 and France on Aug. 4 before the knockout and medal rounds take place.
