Aldi reveals little-known trolley rule

Shoppers might think they know their local Aldi inside out, but the supermarket has said that some of its most useful store features are hiding in plain sight. From shelf dividers to tiny yellow checkout numbers, Julie Ashfield, chief commercial officer at Aldi UK, has revealed four clever store features that shoppers might not have noticed before, and what they mean. One of these is the shelf found inside some of Aldi’s larger trolleys.

The internal shelf below larger Aldi trolleys is specifically designed to create extra space for bigger and bulkier products, helping shoppers make better use of the room available. Keeping these items separate from the main trolley also makes it easier to pack shopping efficiently, while helping protect softer or more delicate products from being squashed underneath heavier items, the supermarket said.

Another useful feature highlighted by Ms Ashfield is the yellow numbers found on some of Aldi’s larger or heavier products such as dog food or compost. These small numbers are actually unique checkout codes, which allows staff to process the item at the till without shoppers having to lift it onto the checkout.

Aldi has also explained the reason behind the metal dividers found on shelves for products such as wine and bottled drinks. While they help keep stock organised, the dividers have another practical purpose. Supermarket assistants can use them to pull bottles from the back of the shelf towards the front, bringing them within easier reach, meaning they don’t need to move each bottle forward individually. This helps save time when managing stock.

Finally, shoppers may have noticed that some Aldi products are left inside cardboard boxes on the shelves rather than being unpacked individually. “Many Aldi products arrive in shelf-ready packaging, meaning they can be moved straight onto shelves without colleagues having to unpack every item individually,” the supermarket said.

Julie Ashfield said: “There are lots of thoughtful details built into every Aldi store that customers may see week after week without realising the role they play.

“From yellow checkout numbers that help colleagues process larger and heavier items more easily, to shelf dividers that bring products within easy reach, every feature is designed with a practical purpose.

“Together, these small but smart design choices help make Aldi stores easier to shop, keeping the weekly shop simple, quick and reliable for customers.”
