Aldi to close six stores as part of £6.5bn growth plan – full list

Aldi is forging ahead with its aggressive expansion plans, which have so far come in the form of a massive shake-up across the UK.

This has meant new storesand changes to opening hours in order for the German discount grocer to continue offering bargain prices at the cash register.

But, in a move that may appear counterproductive to some, the discount supermarket is closing numerous stores in the name of expansion.

Yes, we do hear you ask: “How does that make sense?” Well, to keep costs down which trickles down to cheaper prices at the till, Aldi is trimming the fat, so to speak. Or, as an Aldi spokesperson put it after a recent store closure, shutting stores is all as part of a plan to “better allocate resources while maintaining a high-quality shopping experience” at nearby locations.

The Aldi spokesperson added that affected employees are offered transfers to nearby stores, to make redistribution of resources less brutal on its staffers and their communities.

As it turns out, the discount German grocer is being just as dogged in the American market. As well as its aggressive UK expansion, Aldi is forging ahead with a similar strategy across the pond.

There are more than 2,500 Aldi supermarkets across 41 states in the US, with Washington, D.C. Florida, Illinois, and Ohio playing host to the largest number of stores for American customers. It’s Aldi’s most aggressive US expansion to date, with more than 225 new stores opening across the US in 2026, marking the German retailer’s biggest expansion effort ever within a single-year.

It’s all part of a five-year, $9 billion (£6.6 billion) growth strategy that will see the supermarket open up shop in completely new markets like Phoenix, Arizona, where Aldi will open a bumper 10 new stores by the time 2026 is over.

Across America, Aldi plans to have almost 2,800 locations by the conclusion of this year, with a total of 3,200 stores planned to open by 2028.

The move will cement Aldi as a dominant player in the US market, backing up the supermarket’s already-won title as one of the largest grocery chains in the US by number of stores. By revenue, however, it does still trail behind Walmart.

As the cost of living appears to perpetually increase, shoppers in the US – and in the UK around the world – are more focused than ever before on nabbing a bargain or a sweet deal. Aldi’s value-driven approach resonates with that focus, leading to the discount grocer becoming a hit across Europe, the UK, US, and the world in recent years.

An even bigger draw card for shoppers comes in the form of delivery partnerships with platforms such as Uber Eats, meaning the brand can reach beyond its local area to reach customers who can’t make it into stores in person.
