Austria’s former foreign minister, Alexander Schallenberg, was sworn in as the country’s new chancellor on Monday.
Schallenberg takes over from Sebastian Kurz, who resigned amid a swirling corruption probe on Saturday. Days before, the Green party, which ruled in coalition with Kurz’s conservative People’s Party (ÖVP), had threatened to break up the government if Kurz wasn’t replaced.
President Alexander Van der Bellen welcomed Schallenberg to the president’s office in Vienna on Monday afternoon and congratulated him on his new role. Van der Bellen also confirmed Michael Linhart from the ÖVP as Austria’s new foreign minister.
Charles Michel, president of the European Council, also congratulated Schallenberg on his elevation. “Looking forward to working with you,†Michel tweeted.
