Donald Trump was sworn in as the 47th president of the United States yesterday, completing one of the most astounding political comebacks in American history.
Trump was the first American president since the 19th century to win a second term after losing the White House, but his historic second inauguration didn’t occur without a few mishaps.
The inauguration had to be moved indoors Monday due to a particularly frigid wintry spell across much of the US, causing significant changes to the event after years of tedious planning.
The new president and first lady attempted to celebrate their return to the White House with a public display of affection but weren’t able to make contact thanks to Melania’s wide-brimmed hat.
He also didn’t place his hand on a bible or the US Constitution as he took the presidential oath – either because he had decided to break with protocol or perhaps because he just forgot.
Country superstar Carrie Underwood, who was tapped to sing America the Beautiful at the ceremony, was forced to make a quick change to her performance after an unexpected technical difficulty.

Biting his bottom lip, the Tesla billionaire thumped his right hand over his heart, fingers spread wide, then extended his right arm out, emphatically, at an upward angle, palm down and fingers together. Then he turned and made the same hand gesture to the crowd behind him.
The gestures were quickly scrutinized online, prompting critics to allege the gesture was an overt reference to Adolf Hitler and the Nazis.
Musk took to his social media platform X to defend himself, stating that his opponents needed ‘better dirty tricks’ and that ‘the ‘everyone is Hitler’ attack is sooo tired‘.
The Anti-Defamation League (ADL), an organization founded to combat anti-Semitism and has criticized Musk in the past, also rushed to his defense, saying it appears that ‘made an awkward gesture in a moment of enthusiasm, not a Nazi salute’.
The ADL also noted that Trump’s inauguration was a ‘delicate moment’ and that ‘politics are inflamed’ but urged ‘all sides’ to offer each other ‘bit of grace’ and ‘perhaps even the benefit of the doubt’.

Article Two of the US Constitution does state an incoming president ‘shall take the following Oath or Affirmation: I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will faithfully execute the Office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my Ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States.’
The apparent oversight has no practical impact on Trump’s inauguration, academics say, but it roused curiosity online.
Despite the inauguration pomp and a bracing speech, the top thing Americans searched for on Google in relation to Trump on Monday afternoon was about him not placing his hand on the Bible, which contains the holy scriptures of Christians and Jews.
What an incoming president swears on – whether it is a Bible, a historical document or nothing at all – is not relevant to them assuming power.

President Donald Trump teased First Lady Melania Trump as he delivered remarks to lawmakers and their spouses at the Capitol Visitor Center after his official swearing-in ceremony on Monday.
He joked that Melania, who was still sporting her inauguration day hat, joked that the chic accessory and Monday’s high-speed winds did not pair well.
‘The wind was blowing like crazy. And with the hat she was wearing. She almost blew away,’ Trump said to laughs as Melania interjected.
‘She was being elevated off the ground. She almost blew away,’ he continued.
Trump, offering the audience a more intimae look at their marriage, also joked that his wife calls him ‘sir’ when she’s angry, couldn’t resist ribbing Melania on her high heels.
‘I have a first lady who has been incredible,’ he told the crowd. ‘I shouldn’t say this, I’m going to get hell when I say this. Her feet our absolutely aching, you know those heels.’
Trump explained that the first lady thought they were going to the White House to change after the swearing-in, but he was asked to address the overflow crowd ahead of the traditional inauguration day luncheon.
‘But she said darling I love you so much but my feet are killing me,’ Trump said. ‘She said we’re going to make it no matter what.’
Trump then applauded his wife for being a ‘beautiful and great first lady.’
Melania stayed off the campaign trail during the 2024 race but has been at his side consistently since he won re-election in November and as they move back into the White House.

However, the arctic blast doesn’t appear to bother Fetterman, who stuck with his usual casual attire.
Social media users were agog at the Senator’s decision, taking to X, formerly known as Twitter, to share their disbelief over the chilly decision.

‘THIS GUY IS ABSOLUTELY NUTS,’ laughed another.
