The U.S. presidential election is only days away (November 5) and Americans, according to a recent survey by The Vacationer, seem split on which candidate—current vice president Kamala Harris or former president Donald Trump—will be better for travel.
When asked about which candidate they feel will lead to lower travel costs on things such as flights, hotels, car rentals and gasoline, 35 percent of respondents felt Trump would have a more positive impact; however, that was closely followed by 32 percent who favored Harris. And a nearly equal 33 percent feel that neither will make an impact on travel costs.
Americans are also fairly evenly split on whose presidency they feel will lead to better consumer protection laws for travel, such as easier and clearer access to refunds/compensation in the event of a major flight delay or cancellation. To that point, 36 percent said Harris, 35 percent said Trump and 29 percent said neither.
The Vacationer also asked whether people would avoid traveling to major cities around the election out of fear of potential mass protests/riots. Nearly two-thirds of respondents (64 percent) said they would, in fact, avoid major cities around the election. More of these respondents (25 percent vs. 16 percent) said they would only do so if Harris wins, while 24 percent would do so regardless.
Methodology: The “2024 Election Travel Survey” was conducted by SurveyMonkey on behalf of The Vacationer. In total, 1,042 Americans over the age of 18 were polled on October 4.
