TikTok is the dominant social media app for the younger generations, with the short bursts of 60-second clips encouraging them to get creative.

Videos using just 60-second music clips has been enough to help certain songs go viral, so imagine what could be done with longer videos?

Well, imagine no longer. In December 2020, social media consultant Matt Navarra announced on Twitter that TikTok would be trialling longer, 3-minute videos.

How can you get three-minute TikToks?

Those with the ability to make and upload longer, three minute videos will have received a notification from TikTok.

The message sent to chosen accounts  reads:

‘You have early access to uploading videos up to 3 minutes long on the TikTok app and desktop! To try it out, make sure your app is up-to-date and try uploading a video from your device to the app or tiktok.com.’

Only people who have been chosen to receive early access to the three minute long videos will be able to produce and upload them onto their account.

It’s not yet known how (or which) accounts are chosen to receive the three-minute trial, or if the trial will eventually be rolled out to all members.

So far, reactions to the extended length has been mixed with some looking forward to more flexibility in their content but others worried it will ruin what makes TikTok, TikTok.
