LONDON, Dec 5 (Reuters) – British artist Jesse Darling was awarded the 2023 Turner Prize for modern artwork on Tuesday and took residence 25,000 kilos ($31,480) as this yr’s winner.
Established in 1984 and named after British painter J.M.W. Turner, the celebrated artwork prize is awarded to an artist born or primarily based in the UK for an excellent exhibition or presentation of their work previously 12 months.
The jury counseled Oxford-born Darling’s use of supplies and commonplace objects like concrete, welded boundaries, hazard tape, workplace information and web curtains, “to convey a well-known but delirious world.”
“Invoking societal breakdown, his presentation unsettles perceived notions of labour, class, Britishness and energy,” the jury stated about Darling, who lives and works in Berlin.
This yr’s jury was chaired by Tate Britain Director Alex Farquharson.
The 2023 prize was introduced at a ceremony in Eastbourne’s Winter Gardens, in southeast England, the place Darling was introduced with the award by British rapper and musician Tinie Tempah.
