As Moldova Pursues EU Membership, Dilemma over Breakaway Region Sharpens

Moldova has a unique opportunity to participate in the next wave of EU enlargement; Croatia was the last country to join the bloc in 2013.

In only two years and four months, the country went through several stages, from applying to join in March 2022 to starting negotiations on the accession chapters on June 25, which is when the European Council gave Moldova the green light. 

However, it is unclear what Moldova will do regarding the separatist Russian-backed region of Transnistria.
