Bhanu Athaiya may not be a recognizable name for many. However, the costume designer has acquired legendary status not only because of her work but also because she was the first Indian to win an Oscar. At an event held by Jio MAMI in Mumbai on Tuesday, September 26, Ashutosh Gowariker, Sonam Kapoor and costume designer Shruti Kapoor celebrated Bhanu Athaiya.
Ashutosh Gowariker reveals that originally, Lagaan, starring Aamir Khan, was set in 1895: “I felt it would be good to have the birth of the Indian National Congress and the rise of Bhuvan as a hero.”
Ashutosh Gowariker, who worked with her on The river (2001) and Swades (2004), shared how he formed a bond with her. He said: “It was absolutely wonderful to work with her. The script for The river it was closed. Even before she had anyone on board as a producer or actor, she knew that the costumes would have to be done by Bhanu Tai. The most important thing for me was that here is a person who has dressed almost every heroine of the ’70s and every iconic silhouette we see from actresses. Nowadays, if you make a 60-second video on Indian heroines, 70% of the outfits will be theirs.”
Ashutosh Gowariker continued: “My only concern was whether she would say yes to a director who (has made two unsuccessful films). So I tried to play the ‘I Kolhapur Chaaah. tumhi pan Kolhapur che aahe’ (Like you, even I belong to Kolhapur)! That was my introduction to her.”
Ashutosh then revealed how he joined The river“I told her the entire script. She loved it. Then she asked me if it was possible to change the year of the movie. She asked if I could move it forward a little.”
Ashutosh Gowariker further said, “Originally, the year was 1885. I chose 1885 because that was the year when the Indian National Congress (INC) was formed. I felt that it would be good to have the birth of the INC and the emergence of Bhuvan as a hero. ” Bhuvan was the name of the main character, played by Aamir Khan.
Ashutosh Gowariker added: “I said it was okay to change the year, but I asked her why. She explained: ‘Queen Victoria was in mourning. She came out of it around 1890. That’s when the whole wardrobe changed from black and gray to gray. became colorful”. I was absolutely impressed. That showed how much knowledge she had!”
He ended by saying, “Of course I was happy to make the change and that’s how the year changed to 1893.”
