UN Growth Programme assertion on shelling of United Nations Compound in Gaza Metropolis
East Jerusalem, 11 November 2023 – The United Nations Growth Programme (UNDP) is deeply distressed by preliminary reviews of the shelling of the United Nations compound in Gaza Metropolis, which UNDP’s Programme of Help to the Palestinian Individuals managed till 13 October when UN employees vacated the premises.
The shelling has reportedly resulted in a big variety of deaths and accidents.
On 6 November UNDP reported that a number of hundred folks searching for refuge had entered the compound, and there are indications that this quantity has since elevated considerably.
The continuing tragedy of demise and damage to civilians ensnared on this battle is unacceptable and should cease.
Civilians, civilian infrastructure, and the inviolability of UN amenities, have to be revered and guarded always. Worldwide humanitarian regulation, together with the rules of distinction, proportionality, and precaution, have to be revered and upheld.
UNDP’s Programme of Help to the Palestinian Individuals was established by means of a decision adopted by the UN Common Meeting on 20 December 1978, calling upon UNDP “to enhance the financial and social circumstances of the Palestinian folks”. We have now been working in Gaza since 1989.
