Ethan Curwood, 19, and friends Zach Panaia, 20, and Matt Gaskett, 20, each wore Australian flags as cloaks to cheer on Australian player Alex de Minaur in his match against Italian Jannik Sinner at Rod Laver Arena.
Mr Curwood, of Taylors Lakes, was adamant that de Minaur was his cousin’s cousin’s brother’s uncle’s son.
“We go way back,†he said.
Also de Minaur was “a very good playerâ€.
Mr Curwood said: “I brought the flag because I’m Aussie. I support the Aussies through and through. In the last two years at the Open, I went to see [Nick] Kyrgios. This is my third year at the Open. It’s just good fun.“
Mr Panaia, of Keilor, brought the flag “to support him. You’ve got to get around him, support him.â€
Mr Gaskett said waving the flag from the stands to barrack for de Minaur could only help him.
“Look, he’s probably not looking at me, but the more Aussie flags he sees in the crowd maybe gives him a bit of spirit, and he’ll go, ’I’m going to do it for my country, and then he might want to win, and play on Australia Day, on Wednesday.â€
