Baby born on highway as mum caught out on way to hospital

When Brittney McCauley went into labour this morning, her partner James was no doubt hoping it would be a simple task to drive her 30 minutes from their Shell Cove home to Wollongong Hospital, south of Sydney.

But baby Alby was in a hurry, and Brittney was forced to pull over on the side of the Princes Motorway.

“I’m like, alright, this is on. This is on,” James told 9News.

Brittney said she had been focused on making it to the hospital, but matters overtook them.

In a stroke of incredible fortune, the couple’s midwife Kylie Hazelton caught up with them on the road.

“I just remember James saying to me, ‘you’re not going to believe who’s here’,” Brittney said.

“I turned around and looked and yeah, Kylie was walking over.”

Kylie arrived just in time to catch the healthy 3.7kg baby born on the car’s backseat.

“It was beautiful, really, really exciting,” Kylie said.

After being checked out by paramedics, Brittney and Alby were taken to Wollongong Hospital.

Then, later, Alby was taken home to meet his two brothers and sister.

“I’m not surprised that he made an entrance like this,” Brittney said.

“We are a pretty crazy family so he fits in perfectly.”
