Bali’s I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport has won a prestigious award.
As the airport welcomes a seemingly increasing number of travelers, leaders are keen to ensure the transportation hub is aligned with environmental sustainability values.
I Gusti Ngurah Rai Airport was crowned one of the winners of the 2023 ASEAN Energy Awards. The airport won Best Energy Management in Buildings and Industries in the category of large buildings.

The Senior Director of Angkasa Pura I, responsible for all operations at the airport, shared the organization’s delight in being recognized for its commitment to energy efficiency.
Faik Fahmi told reporters: “We are very proud and grateful for this achievement. The achievement achieved by Ngurah Rai Airport further confirms that AP1, as an airport management company, is fully committed to efforts to preserve the environment through energy conservation.”

This is not the first energy conservation award that Ngurah Rai International has won in recent years. In 2022, the airport won the Subroto Award for Energy Efficiency, awarded by the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources.
Fahmi added: “Ngurah Rai Airport is Indonesia’s representative in the award category of the ASEAN Energy Efficiency and Conservation Best Practice Awards. This is a positive note for AP I as the airport manager.”
The airport is focused on balancing energy efficiency and the traveler experience. Tourists have noticed that there are a number of energy efficient resources at their disposal throughout the airport.
This includes photoelectric sensors on escalators and walkways within each terminal, as well as eco-friendly lighting.

Fahmi added that “a drinking water distribution monitoring system is also used, the use of LED lights in the passenger terminal and operational areas, and the use of solar streetlights in the pedestrian areas of the airport.”
The use of solar and renewable energy resources at the Bali airport has enabled Ngurah Rai to successfully save 26,592 MWh of wasted energy or the equivalent of saving electricity costs of Rp. 27.8 billion in the observation period 2020 to 2022.

Fahmi concluded: “In addition to successfully implementing energy savings, Ngurah Rai Airport also managed to record a reduction in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions of 21,008 metric tons of CO2.”
These energy efficiency measures help reduce the running costs of your airport. Something the government wants to ensure happens across the board.
The government is in the process of merging three of the state airlines to help reduce logistics costs.
This is a move that many hoped would help reduce flight costs for tourists to Bali, but some aviation experts worry it will take a long time for tourists to feel any economic benefit from the merger.

The Indonesian government is in the process of merging Garuda Indonesia, Citilink and Pelita Air.
For now, the merger will only affect behind-the-scenes business operations and passengers will not notice any difference in their experience when traveling with any of the three airlines.

Both Citilink and Garuda Indonesia have recently expanded their international flight services to and from Bali to keep up with the growing demand for travel to the island. Bali has been the destination of choice for Australian tourists for decades.
This year has not been an exception and Australian travelers remain the most frequent international arrivals to Bali.followed by tourists from China and India.

With this in mind, both Citilink and Garuda Indonesia have added more flights between Bali and Australia throughout the remainder of the year and through 2024.
Citilink now flies daily between Perth and Bali.
Garuda Indonesia now flies four times a week between Ngurah Rai International and Sydney and twice a week between Melbourne and Bali.
