Barcelona’s Inigo Martinez offers injury update after asking to come off against Young Boys

Inigo Martinez played down injury fears after Barcelona’s win over Young Boys in the Champions League.

The defender came off late on and looked to be in deep discussion with the medical staff as he sat on the bench.

Martinez was asked afterwards about his fitness and insisted it’s nothing to worry about.

“I have noticed an overload but nothing more. These things come and go. I could have continued but I decided to ask for a change,” he told Movistar.

The defender scored his first goal for Barcelona during the match, and picked up an assist, and admitted he was happy to get on the scoresheet for once.

“I hadn’t scored for a while. I’m happy with the goal but also with the three points. We had to win no matter what. We’re happy with the work we did in the back and up front. I think that on a collective level the work has been very good,” he added.

“Obviously, with this format, it’s very important to score goals. We were playing at home against an opponent that apparently seemed inferior to us. We knew we had to play well. We saw a united team. I think we’re doing very well despite the recent defeats. Now we have another important away game coming up before the break.

“Since the coach arrived, the idea has taken hold. We had a great preseason and we feel comfortable with this style of play. We are coming into the game with much more clarity and the team is more relaxed. Let’s keep going and let this not stop.”

Hansi Flick has said he’ll give his players a couple of days off after the match which should allow Martinez to get a rest before the weekend’s clash with Alaves.
