National Commission for Women (NCW) Chairperson Rekha Sharma has written to the Rajasthan Director General of Police (DGP) regarding a fair and time-bound investigation into Barmer’s rape case.
The matter concerns April 6, when a Dalit woman was allegedly raped and burned in the Barmer district of Rajasthan. The victim succumbed to burns at Jaipur’s Mahatma Gandhi Hospital on Saturday, police said.
The incident occurred on Thursday in an area within the boundaries of the Pachpadra police station, Barmer district.
The main defendant has been identified as Shakoor and has been arrested, police said.
In her letter to DGP Rajasthan, NCW President Rekha Sharma said that a fair and time-bound investigation should be carried out into the matter and that if the allegations are found to be true, an FIR should be filed as per the relevant legal provisions.
Meanwhile, the state BJP formed a three-member committee related to the case. Pali MP PP Chaudhary, MLA Jogeshwar Garg and Mayor Vanita Seth are included in the committee.
Shortly after the incident, a political uproar was seen in Rajasthan as the leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) lashed out at the government of Ashok Gehlot.
The leader of the opposition in the Rajasthan Legislative Assembly, Rajendra Rathod, condemned the incident, calling it a stain on the face of Ashok Gehlot’s government of Rajasthan.
“This is not the first incident. A case like Nirbhaya takes shape in one place or another every week in Rajasthan. In the Balotra incident, the victim stayed in the hospital for 24 hours and the FIR registered after people protested against them. ” he said.
He further said, “This incident is a stain on the face of the government. For the third time in a row, Rajasthan remained in the top position for rape of women, according to NCR statistics.”
Meanwhile, Union Minister Gajendra Singh Sekhawat has also lashed out at the government, saying women are not safe under Ashok Gehlot’s rule.
“This is not a new incident in Rajasthan. A Dalit woman was raped in broad daylight by a Muslim man who then tried to burn the woman alive,” he said.
“The woman was immediately admitted to a hospital where there is no burn unit. She was referred to Jodhpur after 24 hours and died there due to lack of treatment. Women are not safe under Ashok Gehlot’s rule,” he said. Sekhawat.
Notably, one case has been registered under the relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the Scheduled Castes (SC) and Scheduled Tribes (ST) (Atrocity Prevention) Act, police said.
