Benchmark Sensex gains 346 points on firm trends in global markets

The benchmark Sensex index rose 346 points while the Nifty closed near the 17,100 level on Wednesday amid fresh inflows of foreign funds and firm trends in global markets.

Buying of services, real estate, commodities and auto shares also added to the positive momentum.

The 30-stock BSE Sensex rose 346.37 points, or 0.60 percent, to end at 57,960.09. During the day, it jumped 510.48 points, or 0.88 percent, to 58,124.20. The broader NSE Nifty rose 129 points, or 0.76 percent, to close at 17,080.70.

Among the Sensex firms, HCL Technologies, Tata Motors, Hindustan Unilever, NTPC, IndusInd Bank, Bajaj Finserv, Bajaj Finance and Mahindra & Mahindra were the top winners. Bharti Airtel, Reliance Industries, ICICI Bank and Asian Paints were the laggards. In the Asian markets, Seoul, Japan and Hong Kong ended in the green, while Shanghai ended lower.

European markets were trading in positive territory during afternoon trading. US markets closed lower on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, Brent crude, the global benchmark for oil, rose 0.38% to $78.95 a barrel.

Overseas portfolio investors were net buyers on Wednesday as they bought Rs 1,245.39 crore worth of shares, according to exchange data.
