Benni McCarthy reveals shocking Nedbank Cup ambitions

AmaZulu head coach Benni McCarthy has set his eyes on winning the Nedbank Cup with AmaZulu this season.

AmaZulu have seen a remarkable upturn in form since the arrival of Benni McCarthy at the club however the former UEFA Champions League winner believes winning the Nedbank Cup will make the exact statement the reborn AmaZulu need to make.

AmaZulu currently sit in sixth place on the DStv Premiership log standings, just four points out of the top four however winning the league will take a miracle with Mamelodi Sundowns already 11 points clear of Usuthu.

Benni McCarthy has since identified the Nedbank Cup as the easiest way to deliver silverware to AmaZulu in his first season at the club.

Usuthu visit Black Leopards, a club in a similar position as AmaZulu following the arrival of Kosta Papic, for the quarterfinals on Saturday afternoon.

AmaZulu need to win the Nedbank Cup – Benni McCarthy

“We want to win the Nedbank Cup so that even the doubters can see that the changes are serious,” – Benni McCarthy told Citizen.

“Whoever doesn’t see that things have changed at AmaZulu must be blind. That’s why we have to go far in the Nedbank Cup so that the changes do not only reflect in the office but can be seen on the field as well.

“A while ago one would be able to say the team is not into cups, but that is in the past now. I (Benni McCarthy) am here and the club is now under new owners who have different ambitions. They put together this technical team because they want results so that the changes reflect on the field of play as well.”

AmaZulu will have to first overcome Black Leopards on Saturday afternoon in the Nedbank Cup quarterfinal round. The likes of Mamelodi Sundowns, Orlando Pirates and Cape Town City all still remain in the competition and will undoubtedly make Benni McCarthy’s job all the more difficult.
