Rabat – Brahim Diaz has written his name into the history books of the Africa Cup of Nations, delivering a record-breaking performance as Morocco continued their march toward continental glory at AFCON 2025.
The Real Madrid attacker once again proved decisive on Friday, opening the scoring in Morocco’s 2-0 quarterfinal victory over Cameroon. With that goal, Diaz scored for the fifth consecutive match of the tournament, an unprecedented feat in the 67-year history of the competition. No player before him had ever found the net in each of their first five appearances at a single AFCON finals.
Beyond the milestone, Diaz also extended another national record, becoming the Moroccan player with the most goals scored in a single Africa Cup of Nations edition. His consistency in front of goal has been central to Morocco’s run as hosts, keeping alive their dream of lifting a first continental title in half a century.
Diaz’s impact at AFCON 2025 goes even further. He is the first player in 57 years to score in each of his team’s opening five matches at one edition of the tournament and only the second player in AFCON history to score against five different nations in a single competition, following Egypt’s Gedo in 2010. His goals have come against Comoros, Mali, Zambia, Tanzania, and Cameroon, underlining both his versatility and reliability on the biggest stage.

Twice named Man of the Match during the tournament, Diaz has established himself as the offensive leader of the Atlas Lions. His performances have combined technical quality, composure, and decisive finishing, making him one of the standout players of the competition and a strong contender for the tournament’s best player award.
There was, however, a note of concern late in the quarterfinal as Diaz left the pitch with his thigh heavily strapped, a situation that will be closely monitored by head coach Walid Regragui ahead of the semifinals.
Diaz’s rise with Morocco marks a defining chapter in his international career. After representing Spain at every youth level, he made his senior debut for the Atlas Lions in March 2024. His influence has been immediate and profound since then. He has scored 12 goals in just 19 appearances, rapidly becoming a central figure in Morocco’s attacking structure and a symbol of the team’s ambition at AFCON 2025.
As Morocco edge closer to the final stages of the tournament, Brahim Diaz stands both as their leading scorer and one of the most historic figures this Africa Cup of Nations has ever seen.
