BREAKING: Infant dies in Westlake house fire

The Louisiana Office of State Fire Marshal is investigating a residential fire that claimed the life of an infant early Sunday in Westlake.
The Westlake Fire Department responded to a fire at a mobile home in the 3200 block of Westwood Road at about 1:30 a.m. Sunday. A couple and their toddler were able to escape the burning home, but their infant died in the fire.
According to preliminary findings from state fire marshal investigators, the fire originated in the living room and kitchen area. The exact cause remains under investigation, although investigators have not ruled out an electrical malfunction as a possible factor.
Investigators also determined the home was equipped with working smoke alarms, which alerted the family to the fire and gave three occupants enough time to escape safely.
“This is a heartbreaking reminder that fires can turn deadly in a matter of minutes,” DPS Principal Assistant Chief Bryan J. Adams said in a statement. “In this case, working smoke alarms alerted the family to the fire and gave them critical time to escape. Sadly, despite those efforts, an infant lost their life. We strongly urge every household to install and maintain working smoke alarms on every level of the home and inside sleeping areas.”
The identity of the infant has not been released. The investigation remains ongoing.
