With Baahubali (2015), the trend of releasing southern films in Hindi dubbed versions has become common. Various movies like Pushpa, RRR, KGF – Chapter 2, Kantara, Rocketry, Karthikeya 2 etc they emerged as smash hits in Hindi, so the trend is here to stay. Interestingly, hardly any Malayalam films have taken the Pan-Indian route. But things seem to be slowly changing. 2018which was released on 5th May and is doing great business at the box office, it will now be released in Hindi on 12th May. The film’s actors Tovino Thomas, Asif Ali, Tanvi Ram, director Jude Anthany Joseph and producer Venu Kunnapally made this announcement. on May 9 in Mumbai during a post-screening chat.

The budget of our film is less than the promotional budget of the biggest Bollywood film.”
Tovino Thomas, speaking about this aspect, made an emotional appeal. He said: “Have you ever thought about how difficult it is for us to bring a movie to national attention? We work with limited budgets. We do not work in fancy configurations. When we are working on a movie, our salary is a very small percentage of the movie’s budget. We don’t work for money. We work with passion.”
Tovino Thomas continued: “We are a small state in the far south of India. Our pioneers have been making very good movies. Our films, however, are released in a very small number of theaters. I wish more distributors would come to release Malayalam movies. We don’t want them to distribute it for free or out of love for our cinema. Let them see the movie. If they like it and if they give it a proper pitch, that’s great. After launching it on OTT or after people see it on Telegram, we often get recognition, but it’s not worth it. It’s not good for any of us. So please understand how difficult it is to get a movie into theaters.”
Tovino then said, “We’re doing our best, but not many producers are going to spend a lot of money on promotions. The budget of our film is less than the promotional budget of the biggest Bollywood film. These limitations make us work harder and smarter. We work overtime and that’s how we can create these movies.”
2018As the name suggests, the thriller is set against the backdrop of the 2018 Kerala floods. It has reportedly earned around Rs. 17 crore nett in Kerala with weekday collections as strong as weekend collections. In the UAE/GCC, 2018 reportedly earned Rs. 17 crores gross.
