According to the announcement, the Assam Screening Committee will be led by Priyanka Gandhi, with Saptagiri Sankar Ulaka, Imran Masood and Dr Sirivella Prasad appointed as its members.
The AICC also made parallel appointments for other states. Congress leader Madhusudan Mistry has been named chairperson of the Kerala screening committee, while T.S. Singh Deo will head the screening committee for Tamil Nadu and Puducherry.
In addition, B.K. Hariprasad has been appointed chairperson of the West Bengal screening committee. The Congress move is seen as part of its strategy to bolster organisation and candidate selection in states heading into the 2026 Assembly polls, where the party is looking to improve its electoral performance.
Assam is currently governed by the BJP, which is in power following its victory in the last Assembly elections.
