foxnews host Bret Baier asked the former president donald trump about his 2016 campaign promise to surround himself with “only the best and most serious people” before releasing an exhaustive list of all his former cabinet secretaries and advisers who have vowed not to support his 2024 re-election bid.
Baier sat down with Trump for a wide-ranging interview that began airing Sunday, his first since he was indicted on 37 counts related to his handling of classified documents. The host asked Trump, who is once again trying to clinch the GOP nomination, about his combative record when it comes to his former employees. At least two, his former vice president, mike penceand the ambassador to the United Nations, Nikki Haley, are running against him.
This time, his vice president, Mike Pence, is running against him. Your ambassador to the United Nations, Nikki Haley, is running against you. His former Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo, said he is not supporting you. You mentioned national security adviser John Bolton, he’s not endorsing you either. You mentioned Attorney General Bill Barr, he says he shouldn’t be president again, he calls him a consummate narcissist and a troubled man. You recently called Barr a gutless pig.
Your second secretary of defense does not support you, he called you irresponsible. This week he called his White House chief of staff, John Kelly, weak and ineffective and born with a very small brain. He called his acting White House chief of staff, Mick Mulvaney, a born loser. You called your first secretary of state, Rex Tillerson, dumb as a rock, and your first secretary of defense, James Mattis, the most overrated general in the world. He called his White House press secretary, Kayleigh McEnany, a “milquetoast.”
And several times he has referred to his transportation secretary, Elaine Chao, as Mitch McConnell’s China-loving wife.
So why did you hire them all in the first place?
A visibly frustrated Trump said the list of names was a minority.
“I signed 10 to 1 which were fantastic,” said the former president. “We had a great economy, we had great people running the economy, we had great people in the military. I’m not a fan of Milley, I’m not a fan of certain people on TV.”
“But don’t forget that for every one you say, I had 10 who love us,” he added.
Trump went on to claim that he won the 2020 presidential election, repeating his unsubstantiated and unsubstantiated accusations of voter fraud. Baier wasn’t having it.
“You lost the 2020 elections,” said the presenter. “There were recounts in all the swing states. There was no significant widespread fraud. There were widespread corruption investigations. There was no sense of it. There were trials, more than 50 of them, by your lawyers, some in front of judges you appointed that ended without evidence.”
