‘BRI represents shared interests of Asian countries’ | The Express Tribune

Pakistan, China and seven other Asian nations have agreed to institutionalise their interaction, counter disinformation and fake news, and reject any notion of a ‘New Cold War’.

The agreement was reached at the extraordinary nine-nation conference, organised by Pakistan-China Institute (PCI) have hosted an extraordinary nine-nation conference in Islamabad.

The conference was based on regional economic connectivity, and themed “Belt and Road Cooperation: Promoting People-to-People Bond”.

It was attended by representatives from “Friends of Silk Road” organisations of Pakistan, Bangladesh, Malaysia, Nepal, Sri Lanka and Thailand plus representatives of think-tanks from Indonesia, Philippines and China.

Stressing that the ‘Asian Century’ needs the BRI to progress, the speakers, representing various walks of life, called for strengthening multilateral cooperation, promoting Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) as it represents the shared interests of Asian countries.

They also put forth suggestions for the high-quality development of BRI through exchanges and consultations. The countries agreed to institutionalise their interaction, counter disinformation and fake news, and reject any notion of a ‘New Cold War’.

The webinar was moderated by Executive Director of PCI Mustafa Hyder Sayed.

Speaking on the occasion, the webinar’s moderator, Mustafa Hyder Sayed said “Friends of Silk Road Pakistan”, since its launch in 2019, has provided both a better understanding and information about benefits and numerous opportunities arising out of the BRI through CPEC.

The BRI, he said, has provided an alternate development model to developing countries for promoting human development, which, before the BRI, were dependent on the West and its institutions.

He also termed the BRI a consensus-oriented initiative based on people-centred development. Moreover, he lauded the Communist Party of China for passing a historic resolution during its 6th plenum last month which provided a clear vision for the future.

Chairman Senate Defence Committee and Pakistan-China Institute, Senator Mushahid Hussain Sayed said that BRI, through CPEC benefits the people. He said that the BRI is not directed against any country and termed it as a win-win model of cooperation since it is inclusive and aims to promote connectivity.

The year 2021, he remarked, was an important year in the history of Communist Party of China since it marked the centenary of CPC and the year when China eliminated absolute poverty. He also lauded China’s successful containment of the Covid-19 pandemic and its vaccine help to other countries which saved millions of lives plus China’s leadership on Climate Change.

Director of Institute of International Affairs, Renmin University of China, Professor Wang Yiwei said that the post-pandemic era is all about adaptation to the ‘New Normal’.

He said that in these challenging times, multilateralism is the only way forward, and BRI can be taken as a blueprint to advance multilateralism. He also welcomed China’s Zero Coal policy, which, will help in fighting the looming threat of Climate Change.

General Secretary of Nepal “Friends of Silk Road Club” Kalyan Raj Sharma said that China-Nepal economic relations have been further cemented since the start of BRI and the economic and social development trajectory of Nepal now depends on the BRI. He said that the impetus to advance this relationship with China came after India blockaded Nepal in 2015-16.

Chairman of “Bangladesh China Silk Road Forum”, Dilip Barua called for jointly countering the anti-BRI propaganda which emanates from India and Western countries, and termed the BRI an economic masterstroke of President Xi Jinping, which has improved infrastructure in Asia. Moreover, he said there is a positive perception of the BRI in Bangladesh, since it has started reaping the benefits of this initiative.

Assistant Secretary-General of Thai-Chinese Culture and Economy Association Dararat Puechmongkol said that Thailand has been increasingly cementing its relationship with China especially in the context of BRI, accruing benefits for its people.

Director of Institute of Global Governance and Area Studies, Shenzhen University Professor Dai Yonghong said the international environment calls for advancing green development, adapting green business practices, and promoting human development. The unipolar world that the United States is trying to maintain is disappearing and a multipolar world is emerging. In this multipolar world, BRI will play a significant role in human development.

Senior researcher, Pathfinder Foundation, Sri Lanka, Prof Gayathri De Zoysa said the country is one of the most important BRI partner countries and Chinese foreign direct investment has increased significantly since the inception of BRI.

She mentioned that the Colombo Port City Project is being executed through 100% FDI from China. She called for exploring new avenues of cooperation between China and Sri Lanka in the field of education, science, medicine.

Dr GP Doraisamy, a leader of Malaysia-China Friendship Association said that Malaysia enjoys a close relationship with China. He urged shedding of the ‘colonial mentality’.

Political Bureau Member of Communist Party of Nepal (Unified Marxist-Leninist), Ananda Prasad Pokharel talked about the Trans-Himalayan Multi-dimensional Connectivity Network which is an economic corridor between Nepal and China as part of BRI which is an historic opportunity to overhaul Nepal’s infrastructure. Despite international pressure, Nepal has continued its commitment to the high-quality development of BRI projects in the country since both countries signed MoUs in 2017.

Convener, Asia Progress Forum, Colombo, Prof KDN Weearasinghe said the BRI has led to the economic revitalisation of partner countries. He also outlined the history of China-Sri Lanka relations which date back to hundreds of years and have been strengthened since then.

Veronika S Saraswati, from Indonesian think-tank, CSIS said the way China contained the global pandemic can be taken as a blueprint by other countries. The BRI, she said, has enabled technology transfer between China and partner countries. “The BRI projects in ASEAN countries are advancing with full speed and new avenues of prosperity and growth are emerging with the passage of time.”

Founder of Philippine-BRICS Strategic Studies, Herman Laurel lauded China’s vaccine humanitarianism which has contributed a lot towards containing the spread of the pandemic.

The participants agreed to institutionalise their relationship through digital partnerships. At the conclusion, Senator Mushahid Hussain thanked the participants and said the real reason for the US ire against China is because, as a recent Harvard University study, underlined: “China has displaced the US as the world’s hi-tech manufacturer, producing 1.5 billion smartphones, 250 million computers, and 25 million cars in 2020.”
