Britain names tech expert and diplomat to head its AI summit

LONDON, Aug 10 (Reuters) – Britain has chosen technology expert Matt Clifford and former diplomat Jonathan Black to lead preparations for its global summit on artificial intelligence (AI) later this year.

Both will be tasked with bringing together political leaders, artificial intelligence companies and experts ahead of the event this fall, the government said on Thursday.

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak in June pitched Britain as a possible leader in ensuring the safety of fast-developing technology, saying he wanted to make the country “not just the intellectual home, but the geographical home” of data regulation. AI.

The Sunak government has yet to name a date for the event or establish who is likely to attend.

The European Union has taken the lead with its proposed AI Law, which aims to become a global benchmark for the booming technology.

Britain has chosen to split regulatory responsibility for AI between bodies that oversee human rights, health and safety and competition, rather than create a new body dedicated to the technology.

The leaders of the Group of Seven (G7) economies, made up of Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Great Britain, the United States and the European Union, called in May for the adoption of standards to create “trustworthy” AI. and establish a ministerial forum dubbed the “Hiroshima AI process.”
